I anticipate my students being different from myself in a few different ways. My generation has mostly grown up with social media, but we still allow time to interact in person. Future generations may fully depend on social media and hinder the importance of interpersonal communication. Not everyone comes from the same background. I was fortunate enough to be involved in school clubs and sports, strengthening my human interactions. I may end up with students who may not have been given the opportunity to experience the personal connections I did.
I will learn what their lives are like by creating a safe environment and forming close ties with them so they feel comfortable sharing their background and experiences to be able to guide them to success. This starts on the first day of class by showing kindness and engaging in small talk, continuing throughout the year. When students begin to feel comfortable, they begin to open up more. I will also use different self-examination activities throughout the year to see how students engage and respond. I will remain vigilant throughout the day to observe their approach to these challenges and their interactions with others
Throughout my school years, I experienced long lecture filled classes, and sometimes having to teach myself the material in more depth to be able to understand it. Modern students tend to find lectured teachings unengaging and unwilling to learn the material provided. The challenging part will be having to adapt to a new way of teaching like using short to-the-point "lectures", hands on learning, and maybe even throwing in something they are used to like technology to better aid my students. As time progresses, technology advances. This is evidenced by the way our great-grandparents grew up. Technology has advanced in just a few years, so imagine what it will be like going forward. Although there will be differences as the years go on, welcoming these generational changes will allow me to further understand my students and establish a supportive classroom for learning.
